Zeppelin over London

Our flight was rescheduled four times, I first postponed, then cancelled my holidays for it, and after weeks of delay, it finally happened. Yesterday we took to the air in the Stella Artois 'Star over London', a German-built zeppelin and had a grand view of what London looks like from the air. Representatives of the press were booked on the 'Le Courage' flight, a one-hour round trip from Damyn's Hall airfield in Upminster along the Thames up to Parliament, Westminster and Chelsea before returning home.

Flying in the airship is something of a unique experience: travelling at roughly 30 miles an hour, it is an odd combination of floating in a hot-air balloon and sitting in a helicopter. The difference is that the gondola is quite spacious (and includes a toilet for the faint-hearted), you can move around, the windows can be opened and there is a cockpit, but no vibrations distract you from shooting pictures like in a heli. In short, it was unique, and aerial views from London from about 300 metres above were breathtaking. See the slideshow below:
