Six Greenpeace activists had been charged with criminal damage and a rather ridiculous claim for compensation by E.on, owners of Kingsnorth Power Station which the activists had occupied the previous year. The jury trial at Maidstone Crown Court generated a fair amount of media interest, but the result blew everybody away: The Greenpeace team was cleared of all charges as the jury found they had a lawful excuse for their actions. As far as pictures are concerned, getting this was a case of out-sitting everyone else.
I spent four days outside the courthouse. Whilst other news organisations sent their photographers down for a day at a time, everybody had either given up or lost interest by the time the trial finished. So I was on my own when the Kingsnorth Six finally strolled out of court, grinning and relieved that it was all over and they could go home and celebrate. The picture made it onto the front page of the Independent and on the home news page of the Guardian the following day.
